World Down Syndrome Day (WDSD), 21 March, is a global awareness day which has been officially observed by the United Nations since 2012.
The date for WDSD being the 21st day of the 3rd month, was selected to signify the uniqueness of the triplication (trisomy) of the 21st chromosome which causes Down syndrome.
We encourage communities, schools, clubs, companies and individuals to choose their own activities and events to celebrate WDSD and to help raise awareness of this very special celebration. Together we can challenge perceptions of Down syndrome and enable people with Down syndrome to speak up, be heard and be respected as valued members of society as they strive to achieve their goals and pursue their passions.

How can you help celebrate WDSD and raise awareness?
We encourage everyone to raise awareness about WDSD in their school, community, club or workplace to get people talking about Down syndrome and help people #SeeTheAbility.
It’s easy to do so come on, join in! Here are some ideas to get you started:

Purple Run
Unfortunately, this year’s Purple Run in aid of Down Syndrome Ireland National Office will not take place in the park due to recent uncertainty over public health with the pandemic and the subsequent lack of adequate planning time for the event itself.
We are now asking people to help celebrate this year’s World Down Syndrome Day theme of ‘Inclusion’ by participating in their own Virtual Purple Run this March – run, walk, or wheelchair a minimum of 5km anytime during the 21-day run-up to this year’s WDSD on Monday, March 21st. Get your family, friends, and colleagues to donate what they can to help us continue our work towards the full and effective participation and inclusion of people with Down syndrome in society.
